Artifacts:
Culturally Responsive Project:
My work regarding culture responsiveness extends beyond this project in other academic undertakings. This project represents a turning point in my own understanding of culture because I had a personal cultural awakening as I worked through it. Identifying your own culture is hard to do because you are immersed in it and don’t recognize it, you tend to only recognize the differences in others. I was asked what my culture was and I couldn’t answer the question so I built a project designed to highlight this problem of self-awareness as I saw students and staff misunderstanding situations due to cultural differences. This project signified for me the most growth personally and gave me the most important revelations to work with as I teach diverse students and staff members.

Professional Development Plan and Analysis:
The professional development plan was a great exercise in collaboration and organization of people. I was in charge of delivering the presentation on evaluations for my site. I also met individually with special education programs and their para professional staff to discuss job expectations and how the principal would evaluate them. In our building there are 5 distinct programs each with several aides, needless to say there were a variety of expectations depending on which program the aide was working in. The goal was to be clear about the expectations of the school from the perspective of evaluations and to provide an opportunity for program heads to be more consistent.

Community Involvement Event (Family Fun Night):
The Family Fun Night event was a great deal of fun to organize and participate in. The essence of the activity was to bring families into the building and provide them with ideas for fun learning activities. Teachers volunteered their time to hold different types of fun games such as chess, math bingo, art projects, and other educational games and activities. Families attended in droves and good times were had by all. Together with the Title 1 teacher I got local merchants to donate items for raffle, and food and drinks for families. We also organized newsletters and community resources for the activities, drew up schedule of events and list of people willing to donate their time and resources to the event. It was a valuable and rich experience and I can’t wait to do it again next year.
