Standard five

Standard 5: An education leader promotes the success of every student by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.

Artifacts:
Ethics Reflection:
Throughout the program ethical decisions were an integral part of our discussions and work. Particularly in our analysis of educational law, ethical treatment of students and teachers was central to our work as we reviewed case law. As I reflected back on the discussions and case studies I was given the opportunity to reevaluate and strengthen my ethics as they pertain to being and administrator. The decisions I make as an administrator can now be well informed by my enhanced sense of fairness that had previously been shaped primarily by special education concepts, which included anti-discrimination, equal access and confidentiality. Now I have a better understanding of these concepts as they pertain to other facets of education and bleed into issues like contracts and due process.

Legal Issue Presentation and Activity:
It was my honor to be able to present my cohort for a day on special education law. This is an area, as a special education teacher that I have a good handle on. However, teaching it to others always provides a deeper and more comprehensive understanding so I was able to review and garner new insights into the cornucopia of case law surrounding special education issues. The invaluable experience of presenting to a group of teachers gave me a great deal of confidence moving forward as an administrator to lead a site in developing a quality special education program, focused on ethical treatment of students and carried out with fidelity and integrity.

Final Papers:
For all four semesters in this program I have written about what I learned, and how I would apply that knowledge as an administrator. This process of self-reflection has given me the chance to look inward and assess my strengths and weaknesses. I have forced myself to be brutally honest about my work and what areas could use improvement. This requires intellectual and emotional integrity because if I am dishonest with myself I can’t grow. One of the constant threads in this program has been the emphasis on personal growth and self-assessment. I value that process because I have grown as a person and as an educational leader. I was able to divorce myself from pride and think openly about what I could have done better, and how I would do things differently the next time.
